Grails Surpport still cann't be installed in Extentions of STS2.8.1

rjfeng
I reinstalled STS2.8.1, but Grails Surpport install option can not show up in the Extentions any more. I have tried many times,  Grails Surpport install option still can not show up.

By the way, I use Windows 7.

I deleted every enviroment parameters (such as Path, CLASSPATH) includeing GRAILS_HOME in Windows 7 to avoid that STS may detect the exist of Grails, but the problem still happened.

I am almost crazy!

Since STS delcare best surpport for Grails, why don't STS just include surpport for Grails in itself , or just provide an offline update zip file? Once reinstall, we must online install Grails Surpport, and the process is so difficult, is STS so idiot or is Grails so idiot?

Grails has many good points, but also has many outstanding shortcoming. Every release  inlude some big bug which often puzzle me hard, what most cann't be understanding is the bugs existed in former releases still keeped in very new release.

I want  to give up Grails.

Any way, I just too frustrated, can anybody provide solution for my problem?

Thank you!

Hi Ray,

There are two grails-related entries on the STS dashboard.  The first
is to download the grails framework itself and is labelled "Grails
(current production release)".  The other entry is to install the
grails tooling itself into STS.  Which entry are you talking about?

STS will look in the ../ directory to see if the grails production
release is available.  If it is, then that entry will not show in the
dashboard.

Also, if you are behind a firewall and some update sites cannot be
read then entries from those sites will not be shown (but you will be
able to see the errors in the error log).

Lastly, make sure that STS is not installed in C:\Program Files.  This
sometimes causes problems with installing Groovy support.

Hope this helps.  If it doesn't, have a look at your error log and
paste any relevant errors into a reply.

@rjfeng, there's simply no point in going almost crazy, if you're going to do something, do it completely. For example, Grails pushed me totally over the edge the other day (there is no hibernate session or something to that affect) and I just lost it, threw my laptop out the window, attacked my boss and woke up in this comfortable padded cell.  Fortunately, despite the straight jacket, thanks to the GORM tutorial on hasOne and belongsTo, I remembered my face and that yes, it hasOne nose! In fact with this hasOne nose I am tapping out this message on my trusty iPhone and getting me some Nabble in before pill-taking-time.

OK, seriously, are you sure that Grails support is indeed missing from STS 2.8.1? I had a hell of a time upgrading to 2.8.1 via "check for updates" (the Mylyn update site, that vital, uber-necessary p.o.s blocked me from doing so), but install new software worked just fine to get to 2.8.1.  The reason I say this is, I didn't have to do anything, Grails support was upgraded as well without having to do anything manually in the extensions folder.

I had some issues with my Kaspersky for some reason blocking the ability of STS to download things from springsource.org. It may be worth shutting off your security software for a couple of minutes and restarting STS and see if that solved the problem. Running STS as administrator didn't really help things either.

Hi, guys, thank for your reply.

The entry I want install is 'Grails Support' from the 'Languages and Framework Tooling' section. My STS installed in C:\springsource, not in C:\Program Files.

Again, I uninstalled STS2.8.1, empty the whole directory, reintalled, still in C:\springsource. This time, no entry about Grails or Groovy listed either.

Sometimes, if I am lucky, all entries about Grails or Groovy (including 'Grails Support') will be listed, but install still will terminated with some errors whatever I choose to install (usually,I choose install only 'Grails Support', sometime, also including 'Grails (current production release)' too), such as the following:

An error occurred while collecting items to be installed
session context was:(profile=com.springsource.sts.ide, phase=org.eclipse.equinox.internal.p2.engine.phases.Collect, operand=, action=).

I also shut off all my security softwares.

I think the most easy way is provide the offline upgrade zip file, anybody know where can I download this zip file ?

Thank you!

This does look like a firewall issue.  STS is not able to read the
URLs where of the jars you need to install.

What happens when you try to download one of the jars directly from
your browser (eg-
http://dist.springsource.org/snapshot/GRECLIPSE/e3.7/plugins/org.eclipse.jdt.core_3.7.1.xx-20110929-1800-e37.jar)

Unfortunately, there is no update from zip available.

But all my security softwares including win7 firewall are closed.

And how to explain no install entry about Grails was found in Extentions after emptying the whole install directory and reinstalling STS ?

Are you behind a corporate firewall perhaps?  Are your proxy settings
inside of STS incorrect?  See Preferences -> General -> Network
connection

As I said earlier, if STS cannot read an update site, then the entries
will be missing from the dashboard.  It looks like STS cannot read the
grails tooling update site for some reason, and so these entries are
missing from the dashboard.

I'd recommend that you post a message to the STS support forum where
you can get some better help.

I had the same message when I was having my problems with Kaspersky. What was confusing to me was that I could enter the URL in a web browser and got thought to the web site (with an error message) but the IDE gave the "Unable to read repository at" error message.

There is something that is blocking either the JDK or STS. I spent two weeks figuring out what it was.

I don't have this problem with other applications that check update sites. I wonder what STS is doing different that is getting it blocked as malicious.

I had shut down all Kaspersky functions to install groovy and grails into STS. Then I re-enabled them after I installed them.

I tried adding STS.exe to the exclusion list of trusted applications as Kaspersky support suggested but that didn't work. I can tell because when I start STS I can see that it is looking to springsource.com for updates and it seems to time out.

I found this thread that talks about problems with Kaspersky and
Eclipse.  http://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php?showtopic=73177

I don't know if this is any of the same problems you are having, but
maybe there is something in the thread that can help.

Hi, Andrew, thank you for your continuous focus on my problem.

Here is my condition:

I installed Grails 2.0 RC1 firstly.

According to your reply, I downloaded springsource-tool-suite-2.8.1.RELEASE-e3.7.1-updatesite.zip and updated it into STS and just install Grails Support tool, but the following error showed up:

----------------------
Cannot complete the install because one or more required items could not be found.
Software being installed: SpringSource Tool Suite Grails Support 2.8.1.201111221000-RELEASE (com.springsource.sts.grails.feature.group 2.8.1.201111221000-RELEASE)
Missing requirement: SpringSource Tool Suite Grails Support (Core) 2.8.1.201111221000-RELEASE (com.springsource.sts.grails.core 2.8.1.201111221000-RELEASE) requires 'bundle org.codehaus.groovy.eclipse.core 0.0.0' but it could not be found
Cannot satisfy dependency:
From: SpringSource Tool Suite Grails Editor Support (UI) 2.8.1.201111221000-RELEASE (com.springsource.sts.grails.editor.gsp 2.8.1.201111221000-RELEASE)
To: bundle com.springsource.sts.grails.core 0.0.0
Cannot satisfy dependency:
From: SpringSource Tool Suite Grails Support 2.8.1.201111221000-RELEASE (com.springsource.sts.grails.feature.group 2.8.1.201111221000-RELEASE)
To: com.springsource.sts.grails.editor.gsp [2.8.1.201111221000-RELEASE]
----------------------

I guessed Groovy-Eclipse plugin need to be installed, so I downloaded the lastest archive-2.6.0.xx-20111201-1500-e37.zip and updated it into STS, and now Grails Support tool can updated into STS (still with springsource-tool-suite-2.8.1.RELEASE-e3.7.1-updatesite.zip).

It's really owsome! Thank God!

Then,in Preferences view of STS, I add GRAILS_HOME parameter for Groovy|Grails, GRAILS_HOME and JAVA_HOME parameters for Java|Build Path|Classpath variable.

So, I tried to New a Grails Project, unfortunately, the following errors showed up:

----------------------------
Command terminated with an error code (see details for output)
------System.out:-----------
| Loading Grails 2.0.0.RC1
| Configuring classpath
| Error Failed to resolve dependencies (Set log level to 'warn' in BuildConfig.groovy for more information):

- xml-apis:xml-apis:1.0.b2
- net.sf.ehcache:ehcache-core:2.4.3
------System.err:-----------

However, I can successfully use 'grails create-app ' from command line to create a grails project.

What's really going on? What can I do now?

This post has NOT been accepted by the mailing list yet.
My problem was caused by that Grails(or STS) always tried to update some dependencies when New a Grails Project.  One time, I connected to internet, and tried to New a Grails Project,  the process success。
After that, even I'am offline, also can successfully New a Grails Project. It seem that Grails(or STS) has finded online all dependencies must be updated that time I connected to internet.

I have met another some problems alike this, sometimes,  Grails(or STS) always try to updating some dependencies, and will terminate the process if it couldn't find what it need. As a release version, Grails Support for STS should pack all the dependencies in itself, provide developer an all-in-one develop enviroment.

I have use Grails for somtime, Grails keeps puzzling me with various errors, problems, bugs, wastes me a lot time, mostly, consuming my confidence to Grails.

One word, All-in-one, that is what I need!
